VARANASI
At the confluence of two tributaries of the Ganges river, Varanasi, is a city of many names, bearing a history of over 3000 years, and had reached its zenith as a centre of religion and learning in the 7th century BC . A city steeped in spiritual sanctity and knowledge, which three great world religions – Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism, acknowledge as a place of homage. Later named Benares, the city saw the establishment of the Benaras Hindu University, a pre-eminent center of Sanskrit language, culture, philosophy and learning. As a thriving trade post for many centuries, Benaras was also an important center of crafts and culture under the patronage of various rulers, and is world-renowned for its Benaras silk weaving motifs, metal and brass work, and for its wrestling tradition! Today, Varanasi’s riverbanks (known as ghats) with their temples, shrines and the sacred waters of the Ganges, draw millions of pilgrims seeking spiritual salvation.
This morning after breakfast you can visit Sarnath, a great center of learning where the Buddha preached his first sermon on the Dharmachakra, his code of conduct. Today, a Bodhi tree commemorates Buddha’s initial moment of enlightenment during which he conceived the Eightfold Path to Nirvana. You may also visit the Archaeological Museum which houses a well preserved and broad range of Buddhist relics and artefacts related to Buddhism.
In the afternoon visit a Weavers Colony, the source of the famous Benaras Silk and brocade, the weavers’ colony is a collection of Muslim families who have practiced the craft of weaving for decades. The fabric they spin is famous through the country for its compact weave and refined quality, and is mostly used in making saris. Saris from Benares are considered to be among the finest in India and are known for their gold and silver brocade or zari (embroidery with metallic threads), fine silk and opulent embroidery. The definitive Mughal inspired design – with intricate motifs of gold or silver threads – indicates the period of time when the Benaras brocade gained major recognition from the nobility, and later became popular among the masses.
Today is Diwali, perhaps India's best-known festival. The lighting of lamps against the darkness symbolizes the victory of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair. Several deities are revered during the festival and the story of each epitomizes one of the many symbolic ideals, and can offer an interesting glimpse into Indian mythology and how it has shaped our beliefs and customs.
Diwali is celebrated in different ways across the country: in Varanasi, the Ganges river sparkles with a million oil lamps that float away bearing prayers and hopes of the devout!
This evening visit to the banks of the river Ganges. Just before sunset, you will be guided to the steps that lead down into the river, to witness a Ganga Aarti Ceremony, an evening ritual of lighting lamps against the darkness and offering prayers to the river deity.
A private Diwali dinner will be served to us on a boat traversing the sights of the Ganges. Fireworks and celebrations abound. A spectacular and unique evening.

The one mile long river front is dotted with shrines, ghats and elegant cenotaphs of the Holkar rulers. A magnificent fan shaped stairway leads from the river front to Mahewshwar Forts royal enclosure and Ahilyeshwar Temple built in 1798. The richly carved courtyard leading to the palace has an impressive statue of Ahilyabai.
Also within the fort is the Rehwa Weavers Society where the famous gossamer-fine cotton and silk textiles are woven.
Walk around the charming village of Naoda Todi, just across the river. Next to Naoda Todi, you will discover Shaliwan temple, which denotes the geographical beginning of South India.
Take a sunset boat trip to Baneshwar temple in the middle of the river.

NOV 07 - WEDNESDAY VARANASI

NOV 08 - THURSDAY VARANASI / DELHI
At dawn, you can set off for the riverside, where a boat will be waiting to take you on a little cruise of the Ganges. As you head downriver, you will have a perfect vantage point to watch the many ghats (the steps that lead down to the river) come to life; with pilgrims in their bright orange robes, elderly women in colorful saris offering prayers as they pour water from little copper pots into the river, sadhus meditating or lighting lamps.
Follow this with a visit to the Sankat Mochan temple, which hosts a humble statue of mud and dung that draws pilgrims from far and wide. Amusingly, the temple is also overrun by Hanuman langurs – a mischievous lot that is revered by the worshippers due to their association with the temple’s monkey god, Hanuman.
This afternoon you will be transferred to Varanasi airport for flight to Delhi.
Transfer to Indira Gandhi International airport.. A VIP service representative will provide assistance with check in formalities, security and immigration on departure and escort you up to the aircraft gate.

NOV 09 - FRIDAY DELHI / AGRA
This morning after breakfast drive to Agra on the new expressway and on arrival check into your hotel.
AGRA
The origins of the city of Agra can be traced back to the days of the Mahabharata, the epic poem of Great India when it was called Agrevana, meaning ‘the edge of the forest’. Agra served as capital for the Mughal Empire during the 16th and 17th centuries and flourished as a centre of art, drawing inspiration from Persian, Islamic, Turkish, Byzantine and Indian styles. It has been immortalized ever since by the Taj Mahal – a magnificent marble mausoleum that epitomizes love, yet Agra has so many more monuments that tell a rich narrative of the tides and times of Man.
In the afternoon visit Agra Fort
On the right bank of the Yamuna river, is one of the most important and robustly built stronghold of the Mughals, embellished with number of richly decorated buildings – the Agra Fort. Let our guide tell you the rich, evocative Mughal history of Agra Fort, where emperors like Babar, Humayun, Akbar, among other historic characters take centre stage.
Thereafter visit the Mehtab Bagh garden for sunset views of the Taj from across the river Yamuna. Legend claims this was to be site of a Black Taj that the emperor Shah Jahan wished to build for himself, facing the monument he had built for his love. Instead the Mehtab Bagh is a four-garden layout, typical of Mughal constructions worldwide – with beautiful flowering plants, pools and fountains.

NOV 10 - SATURDAY AGRA / DELHI
This morning visit the TAJ at sunrise
Agra has been immortalized by Taj Mahal – the magnificent mausoleum, which the emperor Shahjahan had built for his queen, Mumtaz and India’s own jewel in the list of 7 Wonders of the
Modern World. Travel Scope recommends that you head there early morning, to watch the sunrise over the Taj Mahal and avoid the bustling tourist queues to enter the monument. Instead let our storyteller guide weaves tales of Agra’s and the mausoleum, as also the romance between Shahjahan and Mumtaz.
Return to your hotel for Breakfast.
Optional - Agra is known for its Marble Inlay, a craft also known as pietre dure, a 350-year-old tradition. The art of marble inlay was introduced to India in the 17th century by the Mughals who were known for their great passion for art and architecture.
To better appreciate the glory of Mughal architecture, visit a marble inlay workshop, where local artisans will showcase the techniques of inlaying precious stones into marble edifices. This technique used widely across Mughal structures is what makes it unique worldwide, and provided much delight to plunderers in the years after the empire declined.
In the afternoon drive back to Delhi and on arrival check into your hotel in Aerocity.
A VIP service representative will provide assistance with check in formalities, security and immigration on departure and escort you up to the aircraft gate.
